Or maybe you already have a job, and you just need more money to pay for that summer vacation.
Whatever your situation is, there are ways to make more money this summer. And we won’t even talk about getting a typical part-time job since that eats up your time, and usually isn’t very much fun.
Become a Summer League Referee
During the summer months, a lot of communities offer sports programs, particularly in baseball, soccer and water sports. You can pick up some extra cash by becoming a referee. Even amateur leagues, such as local recreation organizations, need referees, and they usually pay them a lot more than minimum wage.
In fact, referees are typically paid on a per game basis. That can be anywhere from $20-$100 per game, depending on the sport and the league. And you can referee as many games as you are available for – there’s typically no hard and fast schedule.
You don’t need a lot of specialized knowledge to become a referee. All you really need is a basic understanding of the sport. You’ll be provided with a rulebook, and all you need to do is master it, and you’ll be on your way.
Since games are usually on evenings and weekends, you can do the work in your spare time. And refereeing a sport on a beautiful summer day is a lot more fun than working as a clerk in the store!
Sell Your Stuff
You probably have hundreds of dollars worth of stuff sitting around your house gathering dust. You may be surprised to know how easy it is to convert that “junk” into extra cash. But you can do it a lot easier than you think by selling on the web.
Collect all of your unwanted merchandise, clean it up, and separate it. Any large bulky items can be sold on Craigslist, that way you don’t have to be concerned with shipping costs (and there are no advertising costs either!). Meanwhile, small, high-value items can be sold on eBay. The more unusual they are, the more money you can sell them for.
Sell Someone Else’s Stuff
Once you start selling your own stuff and see how easy it is, you can keep it going by selling other people’s stuff. After you’ve cleaned out your own basement and garage, ask family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers if they have any stuff they want to get rid of. Failing that, you can always buy cheap but good stuff at garage sales and flea markets.
These items can be sold on Craigslist and eBay just as easily as your own stuff. For better quality items, you can also consider selling on Amazon.com. If you have an eye for a bargain, and you like to browse at garage sales and other locations, this can even be turned into a full-time business!
Become a Lifeguard
Okay, this one comes dangerously close to being a part-time job. But it’s one that has definite benefits. For one thing, you’re in the pool and out in the sun, which is exactly where most people want to be in the summer. For another, it tends to be more relaxed than other jobs. You can make $10 an hour or more as a lifeguard if you are CPR certified.
Become a Golf Caddie
This is another seasonal venture, at least in much of the country. Like being a lifeguard, becoming a golf caddie can enable you to get outside on those balmy summer days. Also, since it usually involves a lot of walking, it can be great exercise. And for a college student or anyone else really, it can be an excellent place to make important business contacts or future job prospects.
The hourly pay usually isn’t that great. But since you can make tips, there’s a possibility of making $100 or more for just a few hours out on the golf course.
Become a Tutor
Given the reality of high-stakes testing, as well as competition for college admissions, test preparation is now taking place all year long. Then, of course, there is the more traditional factor that many students need to play catch-up on their schoolwork during the summer months. Either situation creates a built-in demand for tutors.
If you have a good grasp of certain common subjects, particularly math and science, you can make some decent money tutoring students over the summer. In truth, however, you can tutor just about any subject. That includes foreign languages, playing an instrument, or teaching computer skills. You may not even have to limit tutoring to children since there’s a growing market for adults.
You can often get students just by providing flyers to local schools or posting an ad in the local newspaper or on Craigslist. Tutors can easily earn $30-$40 per hour, and you can mostly make your own hours. This is also another of those side gigs it has the potential to become a year-round venture.
Make Money Online
Making money online is a more advanced way to make money. But if you can master it – and I think you can – it can enable you to make money well past the end of summer! In fact, it can even eventually grow to be your main gig in life!
There are all kinds of ways that you can make money online, including starting your own blog, creating content for other people’s blogs, affiliate marketing, selling products, and even providing technical assistance to websites and blogs. This can include graphic design, social media management, comment management and more.
If you want to make more money this summer – as in a lot more than a typical part-time job – give one of these ventures a shot. You’ll make the money you need but still, enjoy all the fun summer has to offer.
